Attendance Policy:You are expected to attend all lectures. Attendance is crucial in order to succeed in the course. Any legitimate absence for a test or quiz must be discussed with me *prior* to the test or quiz date.
Prerequisite: Calculus II (Math 112 or 132, or equivalent credit).
Syllabus: The general topics we will cover in this class are systems of linear equations, matrix algebra, and vector spaces. There are many models of biological, economical, or physical systems which are quite complicated mathematically. No matter what the model, though, it is frequently approximated by a linear system in practice. The unifying theme of this class is to study such linear systems from various points of view (algebraically, computationally, and geometrically). While the applications of linear algebra are extremely important and interesting, we will not have time to discuss them in this class. There will be several optional assignments throughout the semester which cover some applications. By the end of the semester, we will have covered much of the material in Chapters 1 through 5 of the text, and several topics from Chapters 6 and/or 7, depending on time limitations.

  • Important Dates and Class Holidays:
    • Sat, Mar 5 - Sun, Mar 13: NO CLASS (Spring Break)
    • Tues, May 10, 9:00-12:00 - FINAL EXAM
  • (1/19) The problems listed below for Section 1.1 should be completed before class on Friday, Jan. 21, but will not be collected. There will be a practice, take-home quiz given in class on Friday, Jan. 21. The quiz will be graded, but only your top 5 quiz scores and top 5 homework scores will count for your final Quiz/HW grade.
  • (1/19) I will determine my regular office hours soon, but for this first short week, I will be available in my office (Jones 130) on Wed. 1/19 and Thurs. 1/20, from 3:00 until 4:45.
  • (1/31) My office hours on Tues, Feb 1, will be 10:30-11:30 instead of 9-10. All other office hours this week will remain the same as usual.
  • (2/2) In several homework assignments, as well as on exams, you will have True/False questions. For these questions, a complete answer is not given by just the word "True" or "False", but rather this answer with an explanation. I have written up the following examples of complete answers to True/False questions from the text: True/False Examples. Please use these examples as a model for your own answers to True/False questions on future homeworks.
  • (2/14) My office hours today, Mon, Feb 14, will be 1:30-2:30 instead of 1-2.
  • (2/18) The first midterm has been scheduled for Wed, Feb 23, 6:30-8, and Thurs, Feb 24, 6-7:30, in Jones 306. If you cannot make either of these times, and you haven't let me know yet, please email me to schedule a time during the day to take the first midterm.
  • (2/21) Extra Office Hours: Today, Mon, Feb 21, I will extend my office hours to 1-3, and on Tues, Feb 22, I will have extra office hours 3-4:30.
  • (2/22) Extra Office Hours: On Wed, Feb 23, I will have extra office hours 3:30-4:45.
  • (3/2) I will not have office hours this Thursday, March 3. However, I will have office hours today, Wed Mar 2, 1-2.
  • (3/2) Remember, there is NO CLASS this Friday, Mar 4, to make up for the outside-of-class midterm.
  • (3/21) Today, Mon, Mar 21, my office hours will be 12:30-1:30 instead of 1-2.
  • (3/28) I have decided to move Midterm 2 one week later, so in the first part of the week of April 11.
  • (4/5) The following is a list of the sections from the book which will be covered on the 2nd Midterm: Midterm 2 Material.
  • (4/6) The 2nd midterm has now been scheduled for Tues, Apr 12, and Wed, Apr 13, 7:00-8:30 PM in Jones 302. If you cannot make either time, please schedule a time with me to take the midterm during the day on one of those two days.
  • (4/11) Extra Office Hours: Today, Mon, Apr 11, I will have extra office hours to 3:30-5 (as well as my normal office hours 1-2), and on Tues, Apr 12, I will have extra office hours 3:30-5 (as well as my normal office hours 9-10).
  • (4/25) The last Optional homework assignment covers material which *will* be on the final exam (from Sections 6.1 and 6.2), so even if you do not turn it in, be sure to study that material. Since we will not have class on Fri, Apr 29, to make up for the out-of-class Midterm 2, the last Optional assignment will be due in my office (Jones 130) by 9:50 AM on the morning of Fri, Apr 29.

  • Homework, Quizzes, and Tests:

There will be two mid-term tests, both of which will be given outside of class time at an agreed-upon time. For a class like this one, 50 minutes is not enough time for a reasonable test, hence the time slots outside of class. To make up for the time spent on taking these tests outside of class, two class lectures will be canceled (which will likely be the Friday before Spring Break, and the last day of class).

Each Friday, you will either have an in-class 10 minute quiz, or you will turn in a homework assignment, on alternating Fridays. Listed below will be all problems assigned, and the assignments to be turned in will be indicated as such. Each quiz and graded homework assignment will be graded out of 20 points. For the homework, certain problems will be selected from the assignment to be graded with some detail, while the other problems will be just checked for completion. On the first Friday (Jan. 22), I will give you a take-home practice quiz so that you will have a feeling of what to expect. On the second Friday (Jan. 29), I will collect a homework assignment. For your Quiz & HW grade, which will count as 25% of your final grade, I will use your top 5 quiz scores and top 5 homework scores.

Each week, I will list problems below which are relevant to the material covered in lecture. All of these problems should be worked out in detail, and should prepare you for exams. On the weeks which homework problems are to be turned in, there will be a list of problems to turn in, along with a list of other recommended problems which are not to be turned in.

Throughout the semester, there will be several optional assignments given, which will mostly cover applications which will not be discussed in lecture. Grades on optional assignments may replace low quiz or homework scores.

Collected homeworks are due at the beginning of class time on the due date. If the HW is turned in late, but by class on the following Monday, you will lose 1/3 of the credit; by class on the following Wednesday, you will lose 2/3 of the credit. Credit will not be given for homework turned in more than 5 days late. For optional homeworks, no late work is accepted. Everything will be much easier if you turn in everything on time!
