Syllabus:
The general topics we will cover in this class are systems of linear equations,
matrix algebra, and vector spaces. There are many models of biological,
economical, or physical systems which are quite complicated mathematically. No
matter what the model, though, it can always be approximated (and is in
practice, typically) by a linear system. The unifying theme of this class is
to study such linear systems from various points of view (algebraically,
computationally, and geometrically).
By the end of the semester, we will have covered much of the material in
Chapters 1 through 5 of the text, and if time permits, some topics from Chapters 6 and 7.

NO CLASS (Spring Break)
- Tues, May 4, 2:00-5:00 - FINAL EXAM
- (1/20) The problems listed below for Section 1.1 should be completed before
class on Friday, Jan. 22, but will not be collected. There will be a
practice, take-home quiz given in class on Friday, Jan. 22. The quiz will
be graded, but your first quiz/homework score will be taken as the better of
the two grades from the take-home quiz and the first turned in homework.
- (2/2) On Thursday, Feb. 4, I will not have office hours 9-10 AM. Please
let me know if you would like to schedule another time to ask questions.
- (2/10) Due to the College closing today, I will not be holding my Wednesday
afternoon office hours. Please email me if you have questions. I plan on
having my regular office hours on Thursday.
- (2/16) The two main Midterm 1 times and locations are as follows: Tues,
Feb. 23, 7-8:30 PM in Morton 40, and Thurs, Feb. 25, 5-6:30 PM in Morton 20.
Please note the room numbers. If you are one of the handful of people who
cannot take the Midterm at either time, please get in touch with me right
away to schedule a time.
- (3/15) My office hours on Wednesday, March 17, will be 2:30-3:30 instead of
3:30-4:30.
- (3/29) This week, Mar. 30 - Apr. 2, I will have extra office hours
specifically for Math 211. My office hours will be (including my regular
office hours): Tues, Mar. 30, 9-11 AM, 2:30-3:30 PM; Wed, Mar 31, 2-5 PM;
Thurs, Apr 1, 9-11 AM, 2:30-4:30 PM; Fri, Apr 2, 3-5 PM.
- (3/30) The times and locations for Midterm 2 are as follows: Tues, Apr. 6,
5:30-7 PM in Morton 202, and Wed, Apr. 7, 6:30-8 PM in Morton 203. Please
email me if a conflict with both of these times comes up, and we can arrange
a time during the day on Tuesday or Wednesday for you to take Midterm 2.
- (4/2) I will have an extra office hour on Tues, Apr. 6, 3:30-4:30.
- (4/19) I will not hold office hours from Mon, Apr. 19, through Wed.,
Apr. 21. I do plan on holding my regular office hours on Thurs, Apr. 22, in
the afternoon (3:30-4:30), but not in the morning.
- (4/26) The final exam is on Tuesday, May 4, 2-5 PM in Millington Hall 119.
Please note the room is NOT the normal classroom.
Homework, Quizzes, and Tests:
There will be two mid-term tests, both of which will be given outside of class
time at an agreed-upon time. For a class like this one, 50 minutes is not
enough time for a reasonable test, hence the time slots outside of class. To
make up for the time spent on taking these tests outside of class, the last two
lectures of class (Wed, Apr 28, and Fri, Apr 30) will be canceled.
Each Friday, you will either have an in-class 10 minute quiz, or you will turn
in a homework assignment, on alternating Fridays. Listed below will be all
problems assigned, and the assignments to be turned in will be indicated as
such. Each quiz and graded homework assignment will be graded out of 20
points. For the homework, certain problems will be selected from the
assignment to be graded with some detail, while the other problems will be just
checked for completion. On the first Friday (Jan. 22), I will give you a
take-home practice quiz so that you will have a feeling of what to expect. On
the second Friday (Jan. 29), I will collect a homework assignment. For those
two first Fridays, both the quiz and homework will be graded, but I will just
count the better of the two grades. After the second week, each quiz/HW score
will be counted. There will be several opportunities during the semester for
you to turn in an optional assignment to replace a low quiz/HW grade. Some of
the solutions to quizzes will be posted below.
Collected homeworks are due at the beginning of class time on the due date. If
the HW is turned in late, but by class on the following Monday, you will
lose 1/3 of the credit; by class on the following Wednesday, you will lose 2/3
of the credit. Credit will not be given for homework turned in more than 5
days late. For optional homeworks, no late work is accepted. Everything will
be much easier if you turn in everything on time!
