The mathematics department consists of 18 full-time permanent faculty, 2 instructors,
4 emeriti faculty, 5-10 adjunct faculty members, 2 staff members, 3-6 PhD students
10-15 masters degree students in the Computational Operations Research (COR)
program, and approximately 45 undergraduate concentrators.

The PhD program is administered by the Applied Science Department and the
COR program is administered by the Computer Science Department.

There are over 1000 alumni of the department from graduating classes back to 1925.

History:

The Department of Mathematics dates back to the original Charter from King William
and Queen Mary on February 6, 1693.  Mathematics was represented by one of the
six Masters or Professors, and when the full faculty was assembled in 1729, the original
masterships were in Divinity, Philosophy, Oriental Languages, Mathematics, the Grammar
School and the Indian School.

The first professor on record was Hugh Jones who was on the faculty from 1716-1729.
He is the namesake of the present site of the department: the first floor of Hugh Jones Hall.

Here is a complete list of faculty members of the department since 1716 to current.
