Math 112 Second semester calculus Description of the course
Concepts covered in this course include: methods of integration; applications of the integral to geometry, physics, and economics; slope fields and the qualitative behavior of solutions to differential equations; and Taylor series.
Successful completion of Math 112 is awarded 4 semester hours of credit. The lecture sections of the course meet 3 times a week for 50 minutes or twice a week for 80 minutes. The fourth hour is a required class meeting in which students meet with a lab assistant in a computer lab to work through additional material using the computer algebra system Maple. The laboratory assignments complement the lectures and examine themes that run throughout the course. The lab component accounts for 15% of the course grade.
Textbook
Calculus: Single Variable Calculus, Early Transcendentals (5th edition), by James Stewart, published by Brooks/Cole Publishing, 2003. After a brief review of concepts from Chapter 5, the course covers most of the sections in chapters 6-9 and 11.

A lab manual that contains the assignments for the lab portion of the course must also be purchased at the campus bookstore.
The campus bookstore sells a student solutions manual and a study guide. Although useful, these are not required.
Calculators
- The TI-83 or TI-84 graphing calculator is recommended for Math 112. If you have a different model, you may either buy a TI-83 or TI-84 or trade calculators for the semester with a student who has a TI-83 or TI-84.
- On tests and quizzes, you will not be allowed to use a TI-89 or TI-92 calculator or any calculator that performs symbolic manipulations.
Labs
Students will meet in the computer lab in Jones 203 with a teaching assistant for the 4th hour of the course each week, beginning the first full week of classes. As part of the lab experience students will learn to use the computer algebra system, Maple. Homework assignments are given as part of the lab component of the course.
You will need to purchase a lab packet at the College bookstore in Merchant Square. If you don't have one and your instructor assigned Lab 0 and/or Lab 1 for homework, here it is. (You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to see it. You can download Acrobat for free at the Adobe site or or you may go to a campus computer lab to access this document.)
