Abstract:
The higher education of China has changed dramatically in the last
decade. We will discuss some aspects of the changes such as the
movement of merging of higher education institutes, rapid increase of
enrollments, reformation of higher education, degree and postgraduate
education, and challenges faced by Chinese educators.
Professor Jinchuan Hou obtained his Ph.D degree from Fudan University,
Shanghai in 1986. He was among an elite group of earliest Ph.D whose
degree were rewarded in mainland China. He has been a Professor of
Mathematics in Shanxi Teachers' University since 1986, and he became
President of the university since 1995. Professor Hou's research areas
include operator theory, operator algebra, problems of invarinat
spaces, and also higher education administration. He has published more
than 80 research articles, and has obtained numerous awards for his
research works.
Professor Hou is a native of Shanxi, China. Shanxi is one of thirty
provinces of China, with a population of more than 33 millions, and it
locates at central northern China. Shanxi is a mountainous province
famous for its coal, vinegar and snacks like
hand-made noodles. Shanxi Teachers' University is one of largest
universities in Shanxi with more than 17,000 undergraduate and graduate
students, and one of primary goals of teachers' universities is to
train
teachers for elementary and secondary schools.
This lecture is sponsored by a Freeman Foundation Grant, which
supportes Professor Hou to visit William and Mary in Fall 2005
semester. Professor Hou is currently teaching Math 150 (Freshman
seminar) with Chi-Kwong Li, Ferguson Professor and Chairman of
Department of Mathematics.
